Introducing the Pedestrian Wine-Drinker

Posted by perle0 on 2004-08-28 20:17:40 (2103 views)

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
First let's clear something up right away. This column is NOT about drinking pedestrian wines. Life's too short to drink pedestrian wine. No, it's the wine-drinker who is pedestrian. The Pedestrian Wine-Drinker (PWD for short) is just a commonplace wine-lover, an ordinary peon, one who slogs through the wine world on foot, rather than soaring above the crowd on wings of special wine knowledge and ability.

The PWD is a column devoted to wine. It appears regularly on LaWineClub.com, a local community website devoted primariy to wine tasting notes written by you and me--the only real experts on wine as far as you and I are concerned.

Let's dive right in then, shall we? Perhaps the best place to start is to answer the question, what the heck is a tasting note, anyway?

Water with Your Wine?

Posted by perle0 on 2005-10-03 18:20:59 (4943 views)

[The Pedestrian Wine Drinker]
[USA]
Adding water to your wine is almost as old as wine itself. The Romans and Greeks would have never considered drinking wine without adding water first; in fact, they considered it guache behavior on a par today with chugging Night Train out of a paper bag. Even in mediterranean countries today, wine mixed with water is considered a proper beverage for the family's children, with less water being added as the child grows older. Few of us in the U.S. want water in our wine, though. What we don't know is that much of the time, we're getting it anyway. And yet we should probably be thankful that we're getting our wine watered down for us.

Huge Wine Heist in CA a Sign of the Times?

[News]
[California]
In the affluent Silicon Valley town of Atherton, one of the most wealthiest areas in the country, a single theft of over $100,000' worth of rare and expensive wines taken from a private home has wine-lovers abuzz. Even the New York Times has taken notice.

The thieves ignored electronics, jewelry, and lesser wines to hit the basement wine cellar and zero in on the good stuff: the average value of each stolen bottle was $3000. The haul included a magnum of '59 Petrus with an estimated value of $11,000. Because of their focus on high-value bottles, it's clear that the thieves knew their wine.

Viva Italia at Long Last

"What’s it all about? Integrity--there simply is no quality in wine without integrity"
–-Jens Schmidt, Owner, Montecastelli Selections

This past summer, Jon and Laurie of Cork & Bottle made a trip to the Montecastelli Wine Fair in Tuscany to find some new discoveries (we know, it’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!). Montecastelli is a Tuscan-based company that works with Italian wineries focused on estate-grown wines made organically and biodynamically--in other words, wines that are painfully pure and true to region and type. Although the air conditioning was in short supply, the food was good and the wines were incredible.

Over 40 producers featuring about 300 wines were tasted over three days. The producers were charming (and some of them even spoke English); needless to say, the wines were amazing. Jon and Laurie left the fair just dying to get their new discoveries back to Cork & Bottle, and since July they’ve been waiting for them to show up. Waiting. For nearly 6 months. The good news is that the wines are starting to arrive and the nearly 6-month wait for these new discoveries did nothing to diminish the excitement about them. The following wines are some of the highlights of the trip; they are now in stock in both stores and available for purchase on-line.

Happy Shopping!

Slimy Wet Dresses Made from Wine? Magnifique!

[News]
[Australia]
Yes, in case you were wondering when the armageddon would hit, here's a sign that it will soon arrive: seamless dresses created by fermenting wine. The only drawback: for now, you have to keep these garments wet, or they'll tear. That, and they look like they're made from exactly what they're made from: a bacteria-created film found collecting at the top of wine vats.
